Stomach Ulcers

Stomach ulcers occur when the top layers of the stomach lining become eroded.  Acid that is produced in the stomach causes the ulcers to occur.  People that have a history of stomach ulcers, those over the age of 60 as well as people that take NSAIDS are at the highest risk.  When ulcers are left untreated serious complications, which require hospitalization, can occur.

Mild stomach ulcers can be healed with the help of a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) prescribed by a physician. A PPI will limit the amount of stomach acid that your body produces, which gives your stomach lining a chance to heal.  People that take NSAIDS on a regular basis should take a PPI to help reduce the risk of developing stomach ulcers.  A popular over the counter medication, Prilosec, is an example of a PPI.

If you suspect that you have stomach ulcers or are merely experiencing frequent heartburn visit your physician promptly.  A stomach ulcer can be diagnosed quickly by the use of an x-ray or an endoscopy.  Stomach ulcers, when left untreated, can cause stomach blockages, erode blood vessels and cause internal bleeding.
